Mark O'Brien The Pizza Maker
Mark O'Brien is a pizza maker from rural White Lake, Michigan who created a freeze-dried pizza that is edible without refrigeration or cooking for up to two years. O'Brien's pizza is made with traditional ingredients and 100% real cheese, and each slice contains 140 calories.
He sold, Calorie Counter Pizza, in Metro Detroit supermarkets, as well as in other grocery stores across Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Florida.
He says the 12-inch pizza contains 895 calories, compared to roughly 2,000 calories in similar-sized traditional pizzas.
"The idea of a low-calorie junk food is really a kind of gastronomical American dream," said Ryan Mathews, senior editor of Grocery Marketing, a trade publication in East Detroit. "You eat as much as you want, it tastes good, and it won’t make you fat. He’s got the perfect package for the consumer."
With the public’s growing interest in health and calorie-counting, the timing for such a product seems perfectly suited to today’s busy lifestyles. Frozen pizza represents about 10% of the $50 billion spent annually on pizza, according to Pizza Today, a trade publication.
